A Learning Experience with Get the Shifts

Yes, things can be crazy, you need to think on your feet, learn as you go, and you need to smile the entire time. It can be a tough job, but the people you meet and the things you learn make it worth the effort!

What do you think is the best thing you can learn from a job in hospitality?

This week we’re turning things over to our Superstars so they can tell you what they have learned through experience.


For me it’s the tricks of the trade that help me save time. Working in a lot of different kitchens over the last few years, I’ve picked up so much! The best things I learned weren’t from formal training, but tricks passed on from other staff I’ve worked with, or observing different chefs in action.

2. Respect. Working as a waiter has given me so much respect for people working in service industry roles. I make an effort to be nice to bartenders and waiters, and try to tip well. I can’t stand when my friends are rude or unpleasant to staff; I’ve been there and it doesn’t feel good!

3. How to make friends anywhere. There’s this amazing buzz behind the bar – the crazy nature of the job leads to great stories and hilarious jokes. I work with a lot of different people and from working all over the place, I’ve figured out how to make friends with just about anyone.

4. Be efficient: Never walk anywhere empty handed. There is always something that can be cleared away or cleaned or picked up on your way to somewhere else. After nearly nine years working as a cleaner and housekeeper, this is a something I now do without thinking, even at home.

5. The value of just one staff member. From getting to work in so many places, I’ve seen how stressful it can be when someone is late to a shift because their alarm didn’t go off. Or how if even just one person is taking it easy during a busy shift at work, everyone feels it– it doesn’t matter the position. I’ve learned how just one person can make or break a shift, and it’s given me a real sense of pride in turning up early and working hard to help make a difference.
